Two new scoping reviews of heated tobacco science by Imperial Brands further substantiate the category's tobacco harm reduction potential

Imperial Brands believes heated tobacco (HT) products can help make a meaningful contribution to public health through tobacco harm reduction (THR).

Our own HT system is PULZE & iD, and we’ve previously generated high-quality data across our multi-stage scientific assessment framework.

Now, we’ve published two new pieces of HT research in the academic literature.

The first, in Cureus, is an updated scoping review of the existing science on the wider HT category.

Building on our previous review, which covered journal articles published up to August 2021, the latest evidence – published between 2021 and 2023 – continues to indicate the potentially positive contribution high quality HT products can make to public health when used by adult smokers instead of cigarettes.

To reflect the findings, we’ve published an updated version of our HT infographic.

The second piece of research –  also published in Cureus – takes a deeper dive into the existing peer-reviewed scientific evidence on the HT category’s impact on broader population level health.

The paper encouragingly suggests that HT use is almost exclusively observed among consumers with a history of cigarette smoking, with a wealth of positive evidence around their role in helping adult smokers to transition away from cigarettes.

Conversely, there was an absence of any significant ‘gateway’ into regular tobacco usage by unintended audiences like youth.

Head of Harm Reduction and Engagement Dr Thomas Nahde commented: “We’re excited to continue to add to the body of literature around next generation products – with both new studies reinforcing our belief that HT systems like PULZE and iD can help Imperial Brands make a meaningful contribution to THR.”
